Portfolio Review
There are two options for fulfilling the Department of Art + Design portfolio requirement.
With a portfolio:
Applicants who submit a portfolio that is approved by the portfolio review committee are admitted directly into the major of their choice.
Without a portfolio:
Applicants who fulfill the requirements for admission, but DO NOT have a portfolio of work, may be accepted into the Department. At the end of the freshman year, any student who wants to advance further in the Department must submit a portfolio of work that is completed primarily at Northeastern in the foundation studio courses.
- The portfolio review committee is made up of three or more faculty members.
- Students present between 10-15 pieces of work.
- Students who do not pass will be given clear directives to assist them in reapplying.
- Students cannot take upper-level courses until they pass their Portfolio Review.
- Upon successful completion, students will gain full status and access to courses within their major and/or concentration.

Assignment of Faculty Advisers
Once a student is accepted into the Department of Art + Design, they must go to the Department of Art + Design in Ryder Hall, meet with the Chair, and be assigned a Faculty Adviser.
College Advisers
Students should make appointments with the College of Arts and Sciences Center for Experiential Education and Academic Advising for concerns regarding core courses, progress towards graduation, and general concerns.
Students meet regularly with their Faculty Adviser in the Department of Art + Design to review their academic plan, choose courses for each semester; and receive guidance for registering on-line. In addition, Faculty Advisers handle the first part of Senior Clearance and assist with portfolio development. (Students should meet with the Academic Advisor at College of Arts and Sciences to complete the Senior Clearance process once they have done the first part of their Clearance with their Faculty Adviser in the Department of Art + Design).
