A Joint Program of Northeastern University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

This new collaborative program consists predominately of studio art courses with an accompanying group of art/design history courses and general electives. Students will take their studio art classes at the SMFA, which is located directly adjacent to Northeastern’s campus. Art/design history courses and general electives will be taken at Northeastern. The BFA in Studio Art degree will be awarded by Northeastern University. Building on Northeastern’s history of leading experiential education opportunities, the curriculum will integrate practical and critical skills needed to pursue careers such as professional artist, university and art school professor or lifelong maker of culture.

The BFA in Studio Art consists of

Northeastern offers a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Studio Art in conjunction with Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts, one of the most distinguished art schools in the United States. Rigorous and highly selective, the two-year MFA degree program will prepare you for a career as a working artist or a teacher at the college level. The curriculum integrates practical and critical skills across diverse media and disciplines. You’ll hone your practice through individual innovation, creative collaborations, informal mentorship, and academic discourse. MFA students are enrolled at both Northeastern University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and graduate with an MFA degree from Northeastern.

In this degree program you will complete 44 semester hours of studio work and graduate seminars at the Museum School and 16 hours of art history and academic electives (typically four courses) at Northeastern. You’ll have your own semi-private studio space and access to the Museum School’s faculty and equipment. A final thesis exhibition is required. The Museum School is part of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, one of the most comprehensive art museums in the world with a collection of nearly 450,000 works of fine art.
